The workshop is fully equipped and allows Steve to accurately portray the traditional styles and designs as done by pre & post European Maori Carvers using more modern tools.

Timber Descriptions

The wood used is predominately very old Kauri and Totara, mainly recovered from demolition or construction sites. In addition to these, other native New Zealand timbers are used such as Kahikatea.

Kauri (Agathis – australis)

The Kauri Tree is a slow growing evergreen medium density softwood conifer. This tree grows to about 46 metres high with a trunk exceeding 7 metres. The timber is regular, straight grain with a close fine uniform texture free from knots. The timber is highly prized for furniture & is a pale cream to golden brown in colour.

Totara (Podocarpus – Totara)

The Totara Tree is also known as Mahogany Pine and is a medium density softwood. The timber is also highly prized for furniture and is a pinkish salmon colour with a regular with a straight grain and it can reach 30 metres in height with a 3 metre trunk. It is a slow grower and can live for 200 years.

Kahikatea ( Dacrycarpus – dacrydiodes)

The Kahikatea is also known as White Pine and is a native to New Zealand. The timber is a creamy white colour with a straight grain free from knots. This tree can reach heights of 45 metres with a trunk of 1.5 metres.
