History

Moko depict the tattoo lines used by the Maori on the faces of the important male members of the tribes.

These were more or less basic. They have four lines from the side of the nose and around the mouth, with two double spirls on the cheeks and four lines on the forehead.

The eyes are inlaid with paua amore colourful relative of the abalone.

The variations to identify the particular individual, usually a chief, were found in the different patterns in the centre of the forehead, above and below the lips, plus the design near the ears.
